Open air dispensary just behind the line

Outside of a field tent wooden crates have been turned on their sides and covered with a cloth. On top of this makeshift table various bottles and potions have been laid out. There is a queue of soldiers snaking in and out of the other crates strewn around the scene. The first soldier is drinking from a glass whilst his companion laughs. It is thought that John Warwick Brooke took this photograph.

Quinine, root bark and moss were the most commonly used healing tools during this period. All of these proved quite successful and were further developed during the post-war years.
